Avaaz is an organization that was founded in the united states back in the year 2007 that was meant to address various issues affecting people around the globe. It has been carrying out this core mandate in various countries and continents as it seeks to expand and reach every corner of this world.
Its founders came together with the idea of transforming online activism into people driven activism and in the process address issues such as corruption, bad governance, human rights, climate change, poverty and conflict resolution.
Avaaz is another name for “voice” among various languages and it has worked towards remaining true to its original purpose. To ensure accountability Avaaz is run by a board of directors who are responsible for coordination of the various activities and campaigns it undertakes all over the world.
It has been able to achieve major victories on the various activities it has engaged in this include the Paris climate accord where it had been a major champion in mobilizing broad support for climate change action.
Avaaz brought together over 2.8 million people to file a petition to the European Parliament which was meant to fight to keep the internet free from government censorship and corporate control.
Avaaz has worked to bring aid to some of the areas it was needed quickly and this was seen during the brutal Cyclone Nargis in Burma, ruling generals banned almost every aid NGO from the country. They worked with networks of monks, whose monasteries were among the only structures left standing Avaaz was able to reach millions and saved numerous lives.
When an anti-corruption wave swept through Brazil Avaaz was very instrumental and was able to mobilize it members to pressure the government and other institutions to take action and this led to the passing of the clean record law.
Avaaz is also working on an initiative to ensure that there is conserving and protection of 30% of the most vulnerable parts of our oceans.
